Brief History Of The Norfolk-Plymouth County Area Alumnae Chapter

On Sunday, June 14, 1987, the Norfolk-Plymouth County Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Brockton, Massachusetts. Like our 22 illustrious predecessors, twenty-six dedicated college educated women from the South Shore area chartered this chapter. Members from the Boston, South Middlesex, and Springfield Alumnae Chapters were in attendance to celebrate this momentous occasion. Presiding over the ceremony was Dr. Nancy Randolph, National Secretary and Madeline Young Lawson, Director, Eastern Region. At that time, the remaining living Founders were Bertha Pitts-Campbell of Seattle, Washington and Naomi Sewell Richardson of Washingtonville, New York. Olga Gall Lyken was the first chapter president.

Norfolk-Plymouth County Area Alumnae Chapter is a local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. which is committed to living the legacy of our Founders. The Chapter provides services to cities and towns in the following South Shore counties: Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Nantucket, Norfolk and Plymouth. This year marks our 25th anniversary. The chapter remains dedicated to the three S’s – Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service as demonstrated through the programs of our Five Point Program Thrust Initiative:

Five-Point Thrust

At Delta Sigma Theta we use the Five-Point Thrust as an organizing structure to create programs that benefit the African-American community. The Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, which was established in 1955, includes:

  1. Economic Development;
  2. Educational Development;
  3. International Awareness and Involvement;
  4. Physical and Mental Health; and
  5. Political Awareness and Involvement.

Each program’s development and implementation operates cooperatively, coordinated by committees, the national executive board, and national headquarters staff. Leaders belonging to the Program Planning and Development Committee, Social Action Commission, Commission on Arts and Letters, Information and Communications Committee, Membership Services Committee and Regional Officers also participate in developing programming to meet the Five-Point Thrust.
